In 2025, Barker College surveyed students participating in its co-curricular music program to better understand what they valued most. Surprisingly, it wasn’t performances or repertoire. It was the process. More specifically, rehearsals.

But what stings is when students tell us they are no longer engaged, or that rehearsals are simply “boring”. So how do we keep every student involved, particularly through the middle years when so many competing interests are occupying their headspace?

Join Andrew McWade and the North Shore Wind Symphony for Rehearsals That Engage Everyone, All the Time, a practical exploration of rehearsal strategies that build engagement, participation and musical ownership. Through live demonstration, Andrew will examine how we can rethink the rehearsal room so that every student is actively involved in the music-making process, not just waiting for their next turn to play.
