Leadership in orchestral ensembles does not begin and end with the conductor. Some of the most effective musical leadership happens from within the ensemble—particularly from the concertmaster chair. This session explores how educators can explicitly teach and cultivate leadership skills in students through the concertmaster role, developing confident, responsive musicians who lead with clarity, responsibility, and musical intent.


Drawing on professional orchestral practice and classroom experience, this clinic unpacks the multifaceted responsibilities of the concertmaster beyond technical excellence. Participants will examine how leadership is communicated through non-verbal means such as body language, breath, gesture, and eye contact, and how these skills can be taught systematically rather than assumed. The session also considers the concertmaster’s role as a musical translator, temporal anchor, emotional stabiliser, and collaborative bridge between conductor and ensemble.


The clinic will also broaden the discussion to include the importance of other section leaders and principals, exploring how leadership is communicated within sections, between section leaders, and upward to the concertmaster and conductor. Practical rehearsal strategies will be shared for developing clear internal communication, rotating leadership roles, and fostering a culture of shared responsibility across the ensemble.


This clinic is designed for all ensemble educators seeking to deepen student agency, strengthen internal communication, and improve ensemble cohesion, while preparing young musicians for chamber music, orchestral leadership roles, and professional expectations.
