The session will focus on: • Sequencing of skills & knowledge from primary to high school. • Developing improvisation from beginner to advanced • Stylistic interpretation, phrasing & articulation, and what’s not written on the page • How to develop a rhythm section • And most importantly - How do you do all of this if you don’t have a background in jazz?

Humans are born improvisers. Improvisation is woven into nearly every aspect of our daily lives, so why should music education be any different? This talk explores the neurological, cognitive, psychosocial, and musical benefits of integrating improvisationinto the band room, private studio, and music classroom. Participants will leave with both a deeper understanding of why improvisation matters and practical, accessible strategies for incorporating it into their own teaching.
